I grew up in Wuhan, China. While Wuhan was under siege from an unknown virus, the rest of the world watched, unknowing that they would be next. With this spotlight on Wuhan in the media came ridicule, politically-charged opinions, and lies. Bats became the supposed culprit, and the fictitious images and accounts of people in Wuhan eating them, all spread by mass media.
After the pandemic began, we realized that we live in a world where "alternative facts" replace actual facts, and feelings have more weight than evidence, which is the "post-truth" era. The coronavirus has triggered both a pandemic and an "infodemic" of hoaxes, conspiracy theories, honest misunderstandings, and politicized scientific debates. This project explores to find methodologies to reconstruct people's perceptions of truth and objectivity.
